01.31.07: iPLOD: MY ULTIMATE MARATHON PLAYLIST by Mike Sicard | "You can run a marathon with no training as long as you have the right music! Science fact or fiction? Oh, I so hope fact. 01.27.07: MBA TO HOST TRACK CLINIC FOR COACHES. Track coaches from across the state will gather in Nashville this weekend as Montgomery Bell Academy hosts a Track & Field Clinic for coaches this Saturday from 8am to 1pm on it's campus. Featured speakers include Brentwood Academy coach Marshall Smith. The cost ($10 pre-registered, $15 at the door) includes a continental breakfast and the chance to win door prizes. 01.27.07: BOHANNON CLOCKS 4:43 MILE IN SEATTLE. Nashville's Allie
Bohannon, a UCLA sophomore continues her fine form on the left coast. After having a breakthrough year during cross-country, the Harpeth Hall grad, who was previously considered an 800-meter specialist showed her strength over 1 mile at the Husky Invitational in Seattle. Taking advantage of a stellar field and UW's oversize, 306-meter track, Bohannon placed 3rd and clocked 4:43.43 - four and a half seconds under the provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships in March, and just two seconds behind Olympians Jen Rhines and Lauren Fleshman. Her time tops the current state rankings at the distance. Bohannon's Nashville teammate on the UCLA team, Krishna Curry, ran in the 800 meters, but could only manage a 2:17.50 clocking. 01.27.07: SOLID KILO FOR HILL AT PENN STATE. Murfreesboro's Kelvin Hill had his first serious outing in a Georgetown University uniform at the Penn State Indoor Invitational. Hill, the 2005 AAA State 800m champion while at Siegel High, and now a freshman at GU, placed 2nd in his heat of the men's 1000m. He was edged by Hoya teammate, Dan Leyh, who finished 0.26 seconds ahead of the Siegel High grad. Andrew Bumbalough sat out this weekend, nursing a tight achilles tendon but expects to race at the Big East Conference meet next month. [results]
01.27.07: KNOXVILLE DUO IN AT THE DEEP END AT REEBOK MEET. Knoxville-based duo Brooke Novak and Natalie Hughes, who recently moved from Florida, were part of a loaded world-class field in the women's mile at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games. In a race won by Australia's Sarah Jamieson in 4:28.03, Hughes, an All-American while at Florida State University, placed 10th in 4:44.00, while Novak, a 2006 UT grad, struggled home in last place, clocking 4:54.50. Also, in the men's 800m, Knoxville's Jebreh Harris, more accustomed to this level of competition, placed 6th in the men's 800m, clocking 1:50.78. An hour earlier, Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba lowered her own world record in the women's 5000m, clocking 14:27.42, and at the end of the evening Shalane Flanagan set a new U.S record at 3000m, clocking 8:33.25. 01.27.07: FAST TIMES AT NISWONGER INVITATIONAL. Although the meet lacked the quality and depth it had last year, day two of the Niswonger Invitational held inside the 'mini-dome' at ETSU yielded some commendable distance running performances. In the morning, Soddy Daisy's Cameron Bean, a sophomore at Samford University, clocked 15:19.01 to win his heat of the men's 5000m, while in the previous heat UT sophomore Denton Jones, a Webb School gad, clocked 15:17.41 in a heat won by Virginia Intermont frosh Alae Eddine Khannouchi, younger brother of former marathon word record holder, Khalid. Morristown West senior, Haley Moody, representing Knoxville Track Club, placed second in her heat of the women's 3000m, clocking 10:28.85. Chattanooga's Daniel Goetz, a sophomore at Bryan College in nearby Dayton, clocked an impressive 8:31.83 PR in placing 6th in the men's invitational 3000m, a race won by Virginia Intermont's Daniel Kanyaruhuru in 8:21.24. 01.27.07: RACE ON THE TRACE. Lebanon's Scott Fanning won the Race on the Trace, the 12th race in the Tennessee State Parks Running Tour, in convincing fashion. The 36-year-old former Belmont runner clocked 27:08 over the fast, net downhill 5-mile course in Natchez Trace State Park (near Henderson), to win by 32 seconds from Nashville's Stephen Gordon (27:40). Twenty-seven year old Kirsten Sass from nearby McKenzie was the first female finisher in a comparitively weak field, clocking 34:36. Among masters, Milan's Charles Reagan and Murfreesboro's Lee Piccirillo, both of whom recently turned 50, ran exceptionally well, but Reagan took top honors, clocking 29:40. And Clarksville's Jennifer Koprowski, 40, led the female masters in, running a time of 36:08. [results]
01.27.07: CARRIGAN PICKS UP OVERALL WINS #2 AND #3 IN BIRMINGHAM.Nashville's J acob Carrigan continued his winning ways down in Birmingham,AL over the weekend, winning the Brenda Ladun 8K in 27:43, and then the accompanying (but apparently short) 1-mile race in 4:32. [results]
01.27.07: RUNNERS WILD ABOUT SOLD OUT ZOO RUN. The winning times were nothing to write home about, but the 1200 runners and walkers that took part in the Nashville Zoo Run had fun and the event organizers had clearly learnedtheir lesson from the logistical probems they had in 2004. Overall winners, Matt Mansell and Kelly Woodyard, who clocked times of 18:07 and 20:40 respectively, won iPods for their efforts. Masters winners were Mike Kobeck, 47, and Melissa Carolan, 41, in times of 22:12 and 22:51. The real story, though, was the ingenious fund-rasing idea by the race organizers to put the last five available slots for the race on eBay to the highest bidders. Those slots sold for between $60 and $110! [results]
01.27.07: HORTON BREAKS COURSE RECORD AT CALHOUNS 10-MILER. Alan Horton ran conservatively, first mile in 5:28, and was content to let Runner's
Market teammate, Stewart Ellington lead for the first 9 miles of the Calhoun's 10-miler in Lenoir City. The former Eastern Kentucky University runner then comfortably pulled away from Ellington with a blistering last mile of 4:59 to hit the tape in 52:11, eclipsing Bill Kabasenche's course record. "I ran conservatively in the beginning, with a 5:28 first mile, but I was going for Bill's course record," he told TR. "I guess I realized I was going to catch, Stu [Ellington, who had a 10-second lead at 5 miles] around 6.5 miles. We ran together from 7 to 9, but then I was able to get away. He's a tough competitor, though." Ellington clocked 52:23, with Nashville's Keith Kimmons third in 52:41. Forty-two-year old Allen Etheridge of Oak Ridge blew away the masters' field, clocking a very impressive 54:56, good for 6th overall, as 19 men clocked under 60 minutes for this challenging course. And in the women's field, 40-year-old Kathy Wolski clocked 1:03:44, finishing over half a mile clear of the next woman. Runner's Market comfortably swep the team titles. 01.26.07: MILE PR FOR BAKSA IN BLOOMINGTON. Knoxville's Andy Baksa, a former state champ for Farragut High and now a senior at UT, clocked a new indoor mile PR of 4:14.01 in placing 6th in the open mile at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington,IN. [results]
01.20.07: VANDERVORT AND MORTON WINNERS AT NORRIS DAM CHALLENGE. Clinton's Eric Vandervort, 39, and La Follette's Marsha Morton, 40, left the youngsters in their wake at the Norris Dam Challenge 12K, the 11th race in the Tennessee State Parks Running Tour. Vandervort clocked 42:35, cruising to an easy 90-second win, while Morton won the women's division by over 5 minutes, clocking 51:17. Murfreesboro's Bruce Tanksley was the first male master home, clocking 48:46. [results]
01.20.07: SORRELL RUNS 4:11 MILE IN FAYETTEVILLE. Bartlett's Rob Sorrell was narrowly defeated in the men's 1 mile at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville,AR. Sorrell (right), a freshman at Oklahoma, clocked 4:11.29, but was edged by 0.05 seconds by Arkansas' Tyler Hill. Sorrell's time did, however, trump that of UT junior Yarrick Kincaid, who clocked 4:12.55 in Kentucky, and puts the former Bolton High star at the top of the state indoor track rankings so far. 01.20.07: BREAKTHROUGH RUNS INDOORS FOR NASHVILLE TARHEEL
DUO. Nashville's Brock Baker and Morgan Stengel, both sophomores at theUniversity of North Carolina, had breakthrough runs at the Clemson Indoor Invitational in Clemson,SC. Baker, who prepped at Mongtomery Bell Academy, clocked a 15:02.74 PR in placing 3rd in the men's 5000m, while Stengel (right), a Harpeth Hall grad and 2-time state champion for the Honeybears, clocked 18:00.76 in winning the women's 5000m. 01.20.07: KNOXVILLE CREW EXCELS IN LEXINGTON. A strong contingent of Knoxville runners, both UT athletes and post-collegiate runners, dominated the distance events at the RodMcCravy Indoor Invitational in Lexington,KY. Knoxville's Andy Baksa, in his last season for the Vols, placed 3rd in the men's 3000m, clocking 8:20.64, as teammate Jeff Day won in 8:17.11. In 10th place in that race was Alan Horton, running for Runner's Market. He clocked 8:29.49. In the women's 3000m, won by UT-Chattanooga's Lanni Marchant, Knoxville's Kayla Matrunick, an assistant coach with the Lady Vols, clocked 10:00.10 in 6th. In the men's mile, 800-meter man Yarrick Kincaid, a Karns HS grad, clocked 4:12.55 to finish 3rd, and in the women's mile, Knoxville post-collegians went 1-2, with recent Florida State grad, Natalie Hughes, winning in 4:47.80, and Brooke Novak, who just graduated from UT just a sept behind in 4:48.17. 01.15.07: RUNNERS IN NEWPORT BRAVE THE COLD WEATHER FOR MLK RUN. Chris Bishop of Morristown was the first runner to hit the finish line 2nd Annual Wilma Rudolph 10K Race for Diversity Monday in Newport, as some 40 area runners gathered at Cocke County High School. Bishop clocked 36:57 to win, while the first female finisher, 47-year-old Beth Rice of Knoxville, clocked 47:25. [more, Newport Plain Talk]
01.14.07: BIZUNEH SECOND AT U.S. HALF-MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS. Bristol's Fasil Bizuneh continued his fine recent form with another PR on the roads
, clocking 1:02:20 to place 2nd, at the Houston Half-Marathon, which incorprated the U.S. Championships. Bizuneh, who is interviewed in the November/December issue of TR, outkicked Olympic marathon silver medalist Meb Keflezighi to nab the runner's up spot and pocket $6,500. Along the way, the former Arizona State All-American clocked 29:18 for 10 kilometers. The runaway winner, though, was Californian Ryan Hall, who had an extraordinary solo run, clocking 59:43, improving the American record by 72 seconds. Hall collected $21,000 for his morning's work. Also running very well among Tennesseans were Knoxville's Stewart Ellington, who placed 38th and clocked 1:08:27 and Nashville's Chris Demetra, who, five places back, clocked 1:09:42. 01.13.07: DIVINNIE MAKES COLLEGE RACING DEBUT. Former Brentwood High stand-out Tom Divinnie was forced to sit out last fall's cross-country season with injury, but the Davidson College freshman made his first outing for the Wildcats one to remember. Divinnie turned in an all-time top-10 Wildcat performance in the men's 3000m, with a second place finish time of 8:43.35, one place and five seconds ahead of UNC sophomore Brock Baker, the MBA grad who won November's Boulevard Bolt 5-mile race. 01.13.07: TENNESSEANS IN ACTION INDOORS IN LEXINGTON. Several Tennessean post-collegiate runners took part in the UK Invitational held at the Nutter Fieldhouse in Lexington, KY. Vanderbilt grad student, Michael Botti clocked 4:14.76 in third place in the men's 1 mile, which was won by Rob Myers in 4:06.31. Hazel Clark placed 6th in the women's mile, clocking 4:52.36. Natalie Hughes placed 3rd in a deep eomen's 3000m field, clocking 9:37.29, while recent UT grad, Brooke Novak, was 14th in 10:01.13. [results]
01.13.07: FANNING WINS CHICKASAW CHASE. Lebanon's Scott Fanning destroyed a relatively weak 85-runner field in the Chickasaw Chase 10-miler, held in Chickasaw State Park near Henderson. The 36-year-old clocked 56:39, a 5:40-per-mile clip, to win thie race, the 10th in the Tennessee State Parks Running Tour, by over a mile. Forty-nine year old Sherrie Giles of Franklin led the female finishers, clocking 1:17:11, while Murfreesboro's Lee Piccirillo, 50, was second overall and first male master, clocking 1:02:38. 01.12.07: BARGIACHI, VAN WYHE KICK OFF INDOOR SEASON WITH WINS IN FAYETTEVILLE. Two former Memphis prep stand-outs kicked off their 2007 indoor track campaigns with a victory at the University of Arkansas Invitational Friday night. In the open ewomen's 3000m, Baylor freshman Renae Van Wyhe, a Collierville grad, clocked 10:10.53 to win, while in the invitational race over the same distance, Arkansas soph Denise Bargiachi, who prepped at St Benedict Acadamy, clocked 9:39.36, with classmate Caroline Peyton, a Germantown High grad, clocking a 10:00.61 PR in 6th place. 01.06.07:CALKINS WINS HILL 'N' DALE 8-MILER. Twenty-two year old William Calkins was the overall winner at the Hill & Dale 8-miler held at Meeman-Shelby State Forest, near Millington. Calkins clocked 46:10 over the rolling course to finish 15 seconds up on runner-up Stephen Gordon of Nashville. Clint Daniels, 41, of Milington led the masters home, clocking 49:19 for 5th overall. Collierville's Leslie Brahm, 35, led the females home, clocking 59:49, while Jennifer Koprowski of Clarksville won the masters division in a time of 1:02:36. [results]
01.01.07:CARRIGAN OFF TO A WINNING START IN '07 . Jacob Carrigan started 2007 off with the first of what he hopes will be many overall wins. The 26-year-old clocked 16:43 to win the Resolution Run 5K held in downtown Nashville, finishing 4 seconds up on Athlete's House teammate, Grantland Garrett. 49-year old Amy Barrow led the women home, clocking 19:32, and 48-year-old Mark Carver was the first male master home, clocking 17:46. 01.01.07:ELLINGTON WINS NEW YEAR'S DAY 5K . Stewart Ellington hadclearly had a quiet night in on New Year's Eve, as the next morning the 32-year-old former UT runner tore around the Neyland Drive course to clock 15:11 in winning Knoxville's New Year's Day 5K, finishing thirty-one seconds clear of runner-up Andrew Press, a William & Mary sophomore, who outkicked 41-year-old Allen Etheridge (15:45) by two ticks. Forty-year-old Kathy Wolski led the women home, clocking 18:11. [results]
01.01.07: PASTOREKS SWEEP WAKE-UP 5K IN SURGOINSVILLE . Steve and Allison Pastorek of Jonesborough swept the overall titles at the 3rd annual Wake-Up Run 5K in Surgoisnville. Steve clocked 17:33 in cruising home to break the tape. while Allison, 12th overall, led the ladies home in 20:03. [results]
