12.01.07: ETHIOPIAN SWEEP AT ST JUDE MEMPHIS MARATHON: When Atalelech Ketema purchased her airfare from New York City for the St. Jude Memphis Marathon, she bought a ticket for Genna Tufa, as well. "I told him, 'We have to run this race,'" Ketema recalled. "She decided for me," Tufa grinned. "She said we just have to bring home the $10,000. And now we will." On Saturday morning, with some 11,000 runners and walkers taking part in the marathon, half-marathon and Memphis Grizzlies House 5K, Tufa and Ketema each took home a winner's check for $5,000 after impressive first-place finishes in the main event.
Tufa was the overall marathon winner, finishing the 26.2-mile course in a swift 2:17:38, nearly six minutes ahead of last year's winning time. Today I wrote it before," Ketema said. "The first half of the race, I just ran easy. After the half marathon I was feeling good."
On a picture-perfect day for running, Brendan Minihan Jr. of New Orleans,LA and Natacha Whetstone of Clarksville came home first in the half-marathon. Minihan, 32, won the men's event in 1:10:05. Whetstone, 34, was the top female finisher with a time of 1:14:05.

11.24.07: KROEGER WINS FOOT LOCKER SOUTH RACE IN EXCITING FINISH: Franklin's Kathy Kroeger continued her fine recent form, after battling her way back from a summer stress fracture, by winning the girls' seeded race at the
Foot Locker South Region Championships in Charlotte,NC. Kroeger, the junior from Independence High School who is the reigning Foot Locker National Champion, made a move at 2 miles, and appeared to pull away from a large pack somewhat decisively, but was run down in the last 400 meters by a fast-finishing Kayla Hale of Florida.
Kroeger (right), the three-time Tennessee 3A champion, became the first girl from Tennessee to win since the first year of the meet in 1979, when Ginger Sullivan of Harpeth Hall won. Kroeger also qualified for the third straight year. "I just wanted top 10," Kroeger said. "That was my goal. All I wanted to do was qualify. I was just going as fast as I could, because it was just a little bit left. I knew they were a little bit behind me. I was kind of surprised, with about 10 yards to go, when Kayla Hale came up. I just sprinted as fast as I could and I barely nipped her at the tape."
In the boys' seeded race, Brentwood's Sean Keveren had a disappointing showing. Expected to be a shoe-in for a top 10 placing and a Nationals berth, Keveren despite getting out too slow in the first half-mile, got up as high as 13th place at halfway, but then the hip flexor injury that has hampered his training for the last month slowed him on each side of the course's only hill, and he struggled home in a disappoiting 17th place, clocking 15:24. Such was the quality of the men's field that the top five finishers all ran under 35 minutes, and the winning time of 26:09 in Nashville's big Thanksgiving race - the Boulevard Bolt - would not have paced in the top ten at Autumnfest. Among the women, Leah Moore-Thomas, who prepped at Oak Ridge High but now lives in Geoirgia, won her third straight title, clocking 30:26, with trail running specialist Patricia Smith of Maryville finishinh second in 30:49.
