JOSH McADAMSCordova's Josh McAdams continued his positive momentum from his landmark 2007 season by becoming an Olympian with his third place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2008 Olympic Trials. Following his dramatic win at the 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Championships, McAdams surged at the 200m mark and held on to win the gold medal at the 2007 McAdams won the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championships 3,000m steeplechase title with his then personal best time of 8:34.10. With his victory, McAdams became the first distance National Champion from BYU since his coach, Ed Eyestone, won the 5,000-meter title in 1985. A native of Broadview Heights, Ohio (outside Cleveland) McAdams began his collegiate career at Belmont University in Nashville before transferring to BYU after his two-year Mormon mission in Thailand. At BYU, McAdams placed 8th in the steeple at the 2005 NCAA Championships, and then was crowned NCAA Champion the following year. But it was in 2007, that he took his steepling to the next level, signing a contract with shoe company New Balance, lowering his PR to 8:21.36 in finishing 2nd at the presitgious Prefontaine Classic meet in Oregaon, and then winning the U.S Championships in 8:24.46. He followed that up with a gold medal run at the Pan-Am Games in Brazil, and represented the U.S at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan. He finished the season #1 in the U.S in Track & Field News' merit rankings. In 2008 McAdams placed 3rd at the Olympic Trials (clocking 8:21.99) and represented the U.S at the Olympic Games in Beijing. He could only muster a 9th place in the preliminary heats clocking 8:33.26, however. This summer he will be hoping for a better showing at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany, but in an event dominated for so many years by Kenyans, and with Ethiopians now breaching the event, the Cordova optometrist-to-be is going to have his work cut out.
